I'm still not too clear what you people really expect people to do tho...

Suppose you're a German-speaker on a mainly German server using a German Windows & a German LotRo client with German item names etc etc & you don't speak English...

Do you expect them not to play? - I'm not too sure Turbine will be all that happy about that TBH.
Do you expect them just not to say anything when 90% of the convos in OOC channel are also in their mother-tongue?
Like... nothing but German for an hour or two & then "Stop speaking German you fucking Nazi bastards"...

Yeah really makes a good impression.

What do you expect Germans to speak among other Germans when hardly anybody but Germans is on & nobody is saying anything in any other language?

Mind you - It might be the case that I almost only see the German stuff cos I have a fair number of abusive English-speakers on my ignore list :p

Thats just what I wonder, are really the Majority of Germans so bad on English that they do need a server of their own, well if thats the case then I guess there is nothing to do about.

It's not like Sweds would get a Server of their own because some of us can't speak English and I would never even consider that an option either, if you can't speak English, then tuff luck tbh.

All Game servers should in my opinion be English once, because it's not like it's that hard to learn English, also most countries learn English as their second languages(not German, and not French), thats why it's more Logical to have English, people who don't know the English language are rare, and more learn it every day.

If I couldent handle the English language there would be loads of games I couldent play.

Still if they think it's profitable to open French and German servers also, then I don't care, but I will play on the once haveing English as main language.

And you'r "Stop speaking German you fucking Nazi bastards"... comment is just silly, it has nothing to do with that even if some people may say this, I avoide speaking Swedish when there is English speaking people around, and I would expect to get a rude comment if I did.

And more and more people learn English, more or less everything is in English, so ofcourse the logical thing is to have English as the language even for MMO'S, but as I said if they need servers of their own, then fine.

TBH on XBox live if I'm playing GRAW2 or something and they start speaking foreign I don't care unless it's like a team game and I could really do with understanding them in which case I just find a different server.

It's a different story there though I guess as games are player host so you tend to respect the host whereas in MMOs it's a big fat free for all.

Just as another note too btw, I don't think the insistence on speaking English is just cos us Brits are so arrogant, I think it makes sense in that there are so many languages in Europe, yet English is the one most widely spoken at least as a second language. As Elrandhir pointed out, what happens if you've got people speaking Swedish, Norwegian, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, English? It makes it hard to coordinate in a game where coordination is often needed.

It is indeed easier for me to say speak English because I am English but speaking English is probably also easier for other groups too I'd guess, certainly the Scandinavians generally seem more comfortable with English than any other language (except their own of course). I guess basically English seems to be the more common ground because whilst not the biggest language in the world per head of population who speak it as their first language, it is the most spoken internationally - this is probably largely because whilst there's 1.3 billion Chinese speakers in the world probably only about 0.3 billion of them use the language outside their own country or online, many of these may never speak to someone outside the village they were born in for example. The same goes for Spanish, whilst it has a lot of speakers worldwide, many of them are in poor nations where people can't afford to leave the country or access the internet.

Sorry bout blowing up earlier :)

But anyway :p

Im always stunned by the level of fluency people have in english when they are born and raised not in the UK.
It puts my poor language skills to shame tbh :)
But I am more likely to meet an english person who cannot speak german/french/spanish than i am to meet a german/french/spanish person who cannot speak english.

It may suck but fact is - we tend to not be so good at languages so your doomed to have an english server for the generic language :p

On a side note :p Someone joked there should be a gaelic server for the irish and a welsh server for the welsh ;)

There's no reason, with modern translation technology, that all servers can't be multi-lingual. What if the server could translate what players said into a language of personal choice? I admit there would be a few syntax problems and errors thrown up with mis-spellings etc, but it must be possible to incorporate a Babel-Fish subroutine and anything that couldn't be translated could be left "as is". You would at least get the basics of what players were saying.

NPC dialogue could be string based, with a referal routine to a particular string in the language of choice.

This is what I was on about to OohhoO earlier, even UO, an MMO that is now like 10 years or more old had this in. It was pretty sucky but still gave a good idea of what people were on about.

To answer a earlier Question from OOhhOO, yes, I don't expect people to play atall if they don't know English, I ask nothing less from myself, if another language had been the main one, then I would have learned it, or I would just have had to not play atall.

I never use my own language in any game I play, just because I know that most people will know English and therefore it's best to always use it, I may even end up talking English to fellow Sweds just because of the habit to always try to talk English ;D

As I said before if they think they need servers of their own, then well I guess thats up to them, but I don't see why they can't adapt like everyone else.

bah, ohwell pointless to continue this I guess, not like it will change anything, I fully agree with one of Xest's former posts, it says it all really.
